A Typical Day at A World of Discoveries Daycare in Columbia

We’ve worked very hard to create a daycare where parents and caregivers can drop off and know, without any doubt, their child is safe and in a situation in which they may thrive. So, what is it we do on a day-to-day basis? Find out more below.

Motor Skills

With openings for infants and kids up to 12 years in age, we begin teaching and developing both fine and gross motor skills at the appropriate age.

Fine motor skills help develop small muscle movements and hand-eye coordination. We incorporate a variety of stacking and sorting games, puzzles, and arts and crafts to heighten fine motor skills.

Gross motor skills are the large muscle movement where kids use their whole bodies. We practice this with outdoor play, riding toys, ball games, and running, jumping, skipping, and walking.

Dramatic Play

Dramatic play is not only a fun outlet for children, but it helps them explore their imagination and develop social skills as they play with others. Children can role-play and act out different things that help develop decision-making skills, leadership, and emotional intelligence.

At our Columbia daycare, we use dramatic play with kitchen sets, dress-up, and dolls.

Independence

Independence is an important skill for all children to learn — they can learn to trust and make their own decisions, enhancing their self-esteem and resilency. We teach and help kids become independent through the following:

  • Potty training/bathroom skills
  • How to use a cup
  • Proper sanitary practices (handwashing, blowing your nose, etc.)

Language/Vocabulary Skills

Language development is vital to the growth of every child, which is why we place such a big emphasis on it in our daily activities. It’s important for small children to hear and be immersed in language before they speak, and have the opportunity to develop it as they grow. We help kids develop and enhance their language and vocabulary skills through music, storytime, and picture books.

Art

Art is not only a great way for kids to develop their fine motor skills, but a medium for creativity as well. They can enhance their visual learning and work with different sensory identification through different materials and exposure to our sand water table.

A day at our Columbia daycare covers a lot — from motor skills and dramatic play to learning greater independence, language skills, and art!
